  • What drew you to veterinary medicine?
I wanted to become a vet early in my career, but at that time, women were not encouraged to apply to vet school, so I became a clinical nurse. I also taught nursing for years, was a hospital administrator and have more degrees than you can shake a stick at. After a wonderful career in nursing, I finally decided to pursue my first love and become a veterinarian.
  • Favorite moment treating pets?
Once a snake breeder asked me to treat “his girls.” After I did the physical exam on one of the huge snakes, she reared up and looked at me, then slithered up to her “dad” and got on his lap. It showed me that even exotic animals have personalities and can feel great tenderness for their human companions.
  • Do you have any areas of specialty in your practice?
I am obsessed with ear problems in dogs and cats. I adopted a stray dog who had the worst ear infection I'd ever seen, so I consulted with a lot of specialists and learned a lot from them on how to treat ear problems.
  • How do you keep on top of your practice?
I'm a big believer in pursuing continuing education opportunities for all the species and subspecies I see. I also belong to a lot of professional associations.
  • Who shares your life?
My husband, Jim, and our menagerie of pets, too numerous to name, that currently includes a cat, dog, chinchilla, rabbit, guinea pig and birds.
  • What do you like best about practicing at Shea Animal Hospital?
At Shea, we just like animals. It's more than just professional – it's a personal thing. I like that we see lots of exotic animals. I have a background in exotics and have done lots of work with birds and reptiles.
